Diabetes Diet Tips Dos and Don'ts

If you suffer from diabetes this means that your body either: cannot produce insulin (Type 1) or cannot use the insulin it produces effectively (Type 2). Either type of diabetes means a new dietary routine must be introduced to avoid any complications which could include: blindness, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and nerve problems.

Do Eat plenty


Diabetes can leave patients susceptible to infections (a bacterium thrives on in sugar in the blood), so make sure you keep yourself fit and healthy. This means eating the recommended daily allowance of 1500-2000 calories if you are female. If you want to lose weight, be sure to talk with a nutritionist who can help tailor your diet safely.

Do Eat Lots of Fruit &Vegetables

Since childhood the act of eating plenty of fruit and vegetables has been a stress filled one. It's not always easy to get your 5-a-day, but as a diabetic getting a lot of fruit and vegetables in to your diet is really important. Stick to fruits and vegetables that have a low glycaemic index such as oranges, pears, apples, cherries, beans, cabbage, peppers, celery, lettuce and broccoli.

Do Go Whole Grain


Whole grain products naturally offer a good amount of nutrients; containing dietary fibre, minerals (iron, magnesium, and selenium) and B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and foliate). Whole grain food stuffs you should try are: whole grain cereal, whole grain bread, whole grain crackers and whole grain pasta.

Do Enjoy Quality Lean Meats


Lean meats are those that are low in saturated fat and calories, such as: skinless poultry, high grades of beef trimmed of fat, lamb chop, organ meat (heart, liver, kidney), ham, tenderloin pork and a variety of seafood.

Don't Eat Fried Food Often


Fried foods contain hydrogenated oils and can raise your body's cholesterol. If you do want to consume fried food now and again, use canola or olive oil for frying.

Don't Eat White Pasta or Rice


White pasta, rice and noodles have a very high glycaemic index so should be avoided where possible. You can still enjoy rice and pasta dishes just remember; do go whole grain (as above)for a healty diet.

Don't Have Much Alcohol


Unfortunately for those who like a drink, alcohol can pose some serious risks for diabetes sufferers. Not only can drinking on an empty stomach lead to hypoglycaemia but any damage to the liver caused by drinking will effect a diabetics ability to glucose levels in the body.
